On June 22nd, the Republicans revealed their healthcare bill which has been debated in secret and kept from the public for weeks. As we expected, this bill is a disaster for the American people, for Alabama, and for Birmingham. If this bill passes, 23 million Americans will lose their health insurance over the next 6 years. This bill cuts hundreds of millions of dollars from Medicaid, takes maternity and mental healthcare away from millions, and allows insurance companies to deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. The Senate's bill leaves millions of our most vulnerable citizens without access and raises costs on the middle class all to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. If the AHCA passes, it will destroy the lives of millions of people in this country, and hundreds of thousands in this state.
This is a major problem for Birmingham because we have over 90,000 eligible Medicaid recipients in our city and thousands of working class families who are struggling to make ends meet. What are these people to do when they lose coverage? How will they be able to afford the prescription drugs they need, how will they get the care they need when they get sick? They won't if this bill passes.
We should be expanding access to care, not taking it away from millions of people. Everyone in this country deserves quality healthcare. That's why I'm urging you to sign our petition to urge Senators Shelby and Strange to vote No on this disastrous bill.
