When Washington instructs Alabama to do something, many across the state would refer to that act as government overreach. I believe it is also an overreach when Alabama tells Birmingham what to do, especially after the local community has spoken.
This abuse occurred last year with the minimum wage increase, and again today with charter school applications. Today, the Alabama Public Charter School Commission overturned the Birmingham board of education's denial of STAR Academy’s application.
As a member of the Birmingham board of education(along with my fellow board members) I voted against authorizing STAR Academy.
I am an education advocate that firmly believes every child deserves access to a quality education – no matter their zip code.
This ruling from the Alabama Public Charter School Commission is a slap in the face.
