Detective Patterson has 24 years of law enforcement experience with the Birmingham Police Department. He has been with the Business Compliance Unit from 2013-present, worked with Vice/Narcotics Unit from 1997-2013, and Patrol Division from1992-1997.
In his official capacity as a Detective he works with the Public Safety Committee. His investigations include alcoholic beverage licensing, division II adult entertainment establishments, and bingo permitting. He provides criminal histories on applicants, financial backgrounds and other information. He works with the Birmingham City Council, Law Department, Planning Engineering and Permits, and Tax & Licensing.
He continues to be a dedicated, proactive law enforcement professional with extensive investigative experience. He has a working knowledge of procedures and overall crime prevention. Past duties have included drug enforcement, vice laws, and community policing. He possesses excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. He is an exceptional leader that has a firm attitude and reputation of loyal, high ethical and moral conduct.
Ralph earned a Master of Divinity from Birmingham Theological Seminary, a BA in
pastoral studies from the Birmingham Easonian Baptist Bible College; and studied
communications at the University of Alabama.
His law enforcement continuing education includes: Police Media Relations, Officer
Survival, Searches; Seizures, Major Fraud Investigation, Investigation of Officer
Involved Shootings, DEA School, Officer Combat Training, Emergency Management, Ethics and Professionalism, and Crime and Intelligence.
He has been married to his wife Rita for 20 years; they have a daughter Alexia and a son Remington. He is a member of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Police & Firemen’s Insurance Association.
